THE WASTE ACT REVISION - IMPORTANT INFORMATION

As you know, the Waste Act is being revised at present. The working party set up by the Ministry of the Environment to consider the revision has submitted a request for comments concerning its draft proposals.

PYR is concerned about revisions in the bill regarding the recovery of packaging waste, whereby environmental benefits have not been assessed as a whole during the drafting process.

The draft bill contains a proposal for full producer responsibility concerning packaging waste, which would mean the establishment of a waste collection network superimposed upon and existing alongside the present waste collection network. If implemented this would mean increased stress on the environment as well as considerable additional costs imposed on society and on packers and importers, in particular.

During the spring we will enter into discussions with decision-makers, arrange a seminar and make active efforts with the media so that our concerns are heard and we are able to influence matters. Our aim is a Waste Act that is environmentally sustainable and economically feasible.

We hope that all firms belonging to the Environmental Register of Packaging PYR Ltd likewise want to exert their own influence in order to attain an aim that is important to us all.
